Certified, notarized, or sworn? We'll tell you which.
These three get confused constantly, and paying for the wrong one wastes money and time. Here's the plain-English difference.
Certified
USCIS wants thisA signed statement from the translator or agency that the translation is accurate and complete, attached to the translation.
When: US immigration (USCIS), most universities, and general official use abroad.
Notarized
Often, in VietnamA notary attests to the identity of the person signing the certification. It verifies the signer, not the translation itself.
When: many Vietnamese offices, and some authorities that specifically ask for notarization.
Sworn
Some countriesA translation by a court-authorized ("sworn") translator, a status that exists in some countries but not the US.
When: certain European and other jurisdictions that require a sworn translator.
